Abstract: Fishes are unique among vertebrates in that some of them have many external taste buds, enabling them to use taste as a true distance sense, while others taste a fair array of chemicals with sensors other than taste buds. Furthermore, certain fishes show highly differentiated response patterns to one or more biologically meaningful substances, possibly through having evolved specific receptor sites for these compounds.
